You might remember having a security blanket with satin trim, a lucky tarnished penny, or a raggedy stuffed animal that boosted your sense of security. It had magic powers that allowed you to be real and afraid without judgment, as well as empowered you to access super-hero powers when needed. It got you though a dark night of the soul, a fight with a friend, a punishment when you got in trouble, a bad grade, or the flu. It was the healer of all healers, the friend of all friends.

Regardless of its form your well-worn piece of cloth, the copper circle that stated “In God We Trust’, or that ragged and loved inanimate (to some) object always channeled the divine and provided a deep sense of safety and calm amidst perceived hurdles and rough times. It connected you with peace even when there appeared to be none, brought light to the darkest nights, loved you unconditionally, and over and over again provided the evidence that you can not only survive, but thrive even when the road is bumpy and difficult.

Through this touchstone object you realize (REAL-EYES) that you are stronger than you think, and through the invisible blessing transferred to you through this bond you discovered that you have embodied it’s strength and courage in a way that you no longer need to have that touchstone object always available, but rather have it always available to you within your heart.

Do you remember the children’s book, The Velveteen Rabbit?

Here is my favorite quote:

“Real isn’t how you are made,’ said the Skin Horse. ‘It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.’

‘Does it hurt?’ asked the Rabbit.

‘Sometimes,’ said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. ‘When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.’

Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,’ he asked, ‘or bit by bit?’

‘It doesn’t happen all at once,’ said the Skin Horse. ‘You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”

? Margery Williams, The Velveteen Rabbit I am blessed to have 4 grandchildren, 3 of them boys. One of my guys has

been particularly attached to his security blankets… yes, he has 2… same color and make just in case one goes missing. Even at age 10 he still goes to bed with this mound of extra blue material. Yes, in a crisis when they are not available or on an ‘sleep over’ adventure he does OK, but all things considered they still bring him comfort. He may not know where is shoes are, but you can be certain he knows where those two ‘Tee-Tee Blues Ones’ are.

Did I happen to mention that both of my daughter’s are amazing mothers? They boldly honor and support their children in being who they uniquely are and do whatever they can to encourage and allow them to find their own path to who they are meant to become.

As one proud mama I feel compelled to share this with you. My daughter, Dana, posted this on her Facebook page, and with her permission I share it with you…

Now, if this Facebook excerpt from Dana wasn’t enough to touch my heart, this next Facebook missive to me on Mother’s Day rendered me to happy tears… In Dana’s words…

May we trust those that guide us to our true courage, dare to make and learn from our mistakes (and theirs), forgive them and ourselves quickly,

be real and trustworthy… remembering to loving ourselves as much as we love others, and always remember that love is the answer to every question.

Joy-FULLY,

P.S. Invitation to Share…
